A prototype of the Power Mac 9700

Seen on Reddit (a while ago, the post had been sitting in my drafts), a prototype of the Power Mac 9700.

The Power Mac 9700 was supposed to be the official successor to the 9600, with a G3 processor and plenty of expansion options (six cards). In practice, it was abandoned in favor of the Power Mac G3 we know, which is less expandable. The 9700 has some unique features, such as a PowerPC G3 on a daughter card (whereas it’s socketed directly on the Power Mac G3), EDO memory (rather than the faster SDRAM of the commercial model), etc. You can see here a sort of PCI extension and slots for memory chips, probably video RAM. It’s worth noting that the PCI extension isn’t always present in prototypes, and the name « Power Mac G3 » is rarely indicated on the case. It’s a machine that we often see pop up.
