A prototype of a Pippin with its floppy disk drive

Seen on eBay, a prototype of a Pippin with its floppy disk drive. The price is (really) too high for me, at nearly $2,000 (excluding taxes), but it’s interesting to see.

Starting with the console: there is no marking on the back, and the information on the front (PowerPC and Atmark) are stickers, whereas these details are engraved in the final versions. Under the console, you can clearly see that it is a Power Player console, meaning Bandai’s test model. It is likely equipped with a ROM that allows it to boot from an external device.

You can see the stickers on the front

Power Player

The controller is close to the final version but, again, without any markings. The area is present (above the trackball) but empty.

Finally, the floppy disk drive. It appears to be made of a smoother plastic (typical for prototypes) with a retention mechanism in a different plastic. And once again, there is no marking.
