A prototype of the Power Mac 6100, Piltdown Man

The code name of the Power Mac 6100, one of the first PowerPC models, is Piltdown Man. A prototype of this machine was once listed for sale on eBay.

This is a prototype housed in a Quadra case (slightly different from the Power Mac 6100’s case) with a 2x CD-ROM drive (also a development version). It is a DVT (Design Verification Test) unit with a 160 MB hard drive (a configuration Apple did not sell) and likely a beta system, where the disk is labeled as « PDM » (related to the code name). Internally, there is no RAM installed (the machine likely has 8 MB built-in, like the commercial model), no cache, and no expansion cards. Video output uses the HDI-45 port. The only inserted module appears to be the ROM.
