In a (very) old Japanese article, you can see a modem for the Sega Saturn alongside a Pippin with its unreleased Ethernet dock.
Both consoles were showcased at the Cable TV 97 expo (which makes us feel old), and the article explicitly mentions a 10 Mb/s Ethernet connection for the Pippin. There are also remarks about space allocated for a hard drive, even though the connectors didn’t directly support one. The thing is, Apple obviously didn’t want users to install a hard drive in the Pippin—it would have made it too much like a Mac. In practice, the different ROMs still do a good job of blocking HDD access beyond pure storage.
We’ve seen the Ethernet dock in more recent photos, sometimes with the Pippin @World or the Katz Media model. In any case, it was never commercially released, and one day, I’ll tell you about the workaround discovered with a development console.
