Restoring test OS on prototypes is a problem

In a video on YouTube, Apple Demo showcases something interesting: restoring test OS on prototypes. It’s both amazing and… problematic.

Together with mcg29, they discovered how to install a prototype OS on another prototype or even a retail iPod touch (or iPhone). This is intriguing when it comes to prototypes: sometimes, you find ones that have been updated with the standard OS version. But it’s problematic because it makes it possible to create fake prototypes—iPhones or iPod touches with a test OS. This has been possible for years (I did it), but it was quite obvious: the test OS would boot behind the standard OS. However, it could still be used to scam an inexperienced collector.

With the method used here (not detailed), it’s more complicated: the device actually boots into iBoot like a real prototype. This means fake prototypes—sold for high prices—can now be more convincing.
